Clive Davis talks about what happened during the complex time of firing an employee.
What happened was Dave Winshaw’s attorney, to get him a lower, um, sentence, a more lenient sentence, went to the U. S. attorney in Newark, New Jersey, and claimed that Dave would cooperate with him. The payola was right in the record business, and was, and that included Columbia Records. and the U. S. Attorney acted immediately and announced that there would be an investigation of the record business and that Dragola and Payola would be uncovered everywhere.
That scared CBS enormously. Nothing to do with an investigation of the record business. But CBS’s attorneys said you’ve got to, you’re an FCC, your network is dependent on FCC licensing. You’ve got to separate yourself from the record business totally, so that it does not affect your FCC licenses. And the law firm recommended,
That they let me go, summarily, based on what they called expense that I was submitting my son’s bar mitzvah as a business expense. I had never done that. I didn’t even know it was done. It had just occurred. But there was no question answer. They acted immediately. on instructions, cut the ties with the record division, and I went. I was the sacrificial lamb. It was shocking. It was traumatic.
